The episode of the Jesus Transfiguration on the mountain top is told in three of the four gospels in the New Testament: the Gospel of Matthew, the Gospel of Mark, and the Gospel of Luke. Jesus’ disciples, Peter, James and John were all witnesses on Mount Tabor. This event reveals Jesus as the Son of God, just as His baptism and His resurrection did. Christians celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration on the 6th of August. Discover the story of the transfiguration and what it means for us, as Christians, in this bible passage.
Sunday Gospel Reflection with Br. Samuel Mary, csj. - Hozana
“After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”
When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
Through this transfiguration, Jesus reveals His divine nature to us. On Mount Tabor, He reveals himself to his disciples who, after the sharing of the bread and fishes, recognized him as the Messiah. Jesus uses this moment to announce his victory over death itself and his coming resurrection, in advance of his death on the cross. In his first letter, John—who was present when Christ was transfigured—announces the eternal life which Jesus offers us.
“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our[a] joy complete.” (1 John 1:1-4)
