Exodus

In chronological order within the Old Testament, the book of Exodus is the second book after the book of Genesis. This 40-chapter work is attributed to Moses. Therein, we find the stories of extraordinary miracles such as the splitting of the Red Sea, the manna and quails falling from the sky, and the 10 plagues inflicted upon the Egyptians. What is the Story of Exodus?

Context for Exodus

After Joseph’s death, another pharaoh who didn't know Joseph took power and began to enslave the Jews who lived in Egypt. He even demanded that all newborn Jewish boys be killed at birth. This is when Moses was born.

Moses and Aaron

Moses escaped death at birth and was found by the pharaoh’s daughter. After he killed an Egyptian, he had to flee to Midian where he married Zipporah. 40 years later, God gave him the mission of going to free the Jewish people. Accompanied by his brother, Aaron, Moses began his fight against the pharaoh to free the Jewish people reduced to servitude.

The 10 plagues of Egypt

God sent 10 plagues against Egypt (venomous flies, locusts, death of livestock, etc.) to force the pharaoh to let the Israelites leave. After the tenth plague, the deaths of Egyptian firstborns, the pharaoh surrendered, and the people were freed.

The manna and quails

When they were in the desert without anything to eat or drink, the Lord fed them supernaturally with manna and quails that fell from the sky.

The Ten Commandments

The book of Exodus tells the story of how Moses received the 10 commandments on Mount Sinai and how he then presented them to the people. The Bible also tells us about the creation of the golden calf, which angered God and then Moses. Faced with this act of idolatry, angry drove Moses to break the stone tablets that he had just received from God. Next, God rewrote them a second time. “The Lord said to Moses ‘Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.” (Exodus 34:1)

Construction of the Tabernacle

God asked Moses and the people to build him a dwelling: “Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them. Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern I will show you.” (Exodus 25:8-9). In the Book of Exodus, we find all the details about the construction of this tabernacle.

Exodus 20

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” (Exodus 20:12)

Exodus 14

Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Exodus 14:13-14)

Exodus 12

then tell them, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’ Then the people bowed down and worshiped.” (Exodus 12:27)

Exodus 23
