Parable of the Fig Tree (Matthew, Mark, and Luke).

The Parable of the Fig Tree, also called the budding fig tree, is told in the three synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. It is not to be confused with the Parable of the Sterile Fig Tree reported only by Luke (13:6-9). The parable of the fig tree is used by Jesus to evoke the end times and announce the signs that will precede.

“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” (Matthew 24:32-35) 

The versions of the parable of the fig tree given by the evangelists Mark (13:28-31) and Luke (21:29-33) are almost identical to that of Matthew. 

Explanation of the Parable of the Fig Tree

This parable is to be understood in the light of its context: Chapter 24 of the Gospel of Matthew. The parable in itself is very simple, it invites the faithful to know how to read the signs of the times, just as the peasant knows how to read the signs of nature announcing the coming of the seasons. However, the parable is not precise: “Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door.”  To understand what Jesus means by all these things, we must enter an eschatological perspective and read the events detailed by Jesus in Chapter 24. Answering the question from his apostles concerning the signs that will precede his return, Jesus describes with images and comparisons the succession of events that must take place before his coming into glory. Jesus insists several times on the importance of not being misled by false prophets and false messiahs. He announces his final triumph and the gathering of the chosen and concludes by reminding everyone to stand ready, “because you do not know the day or the hour…”
