“In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” Fewer people may know much about the third person of the Holy Trinity. It is a gift from God promised by Jesus to His disciples and passed down to them under the form of tongues of fire during Pentecost: it is the Spirit of our baptism. “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him because it neither sees nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” (John 14: 16-17). Who Is the Holy Spirit? 

Paraclete, Spirit of Truth, comforter, Spirit of God, Spirit of Life. The Holy Spirit has a great many names in the Bible. It is pictured as a dove, a fire, or a breath. The Gifts and Charisms of the Holy Spirit

We can benefit from the spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit when we allow It to inhabit us. St. Thomas Aquinas listed 7 of these gifts: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. But, more than just granting these gifts, the Spirit of the Lord can place charisms in us, allowing us to answer fully to our vocation as children of God.

Preparing for Pentecost with Novenas

Christians especially celebrate the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. On this day, we commemorate an outpouring of the Spirit, which fulfilled the Apostles as they met at the Cenacle after the Ascension of Jesus Christ. After being descended upon by the Spirit, the disciples of Christ went on on their mission to spread the Good News. It is customary to prepare for this day with a novena to the Holy Spirit. This can also be an opportunity to consecrate ourselves to the Holy Spirit and ask the Lord for a new Pentecost to be sent to the world.
