Pope Benedict XVI explains that “When reciting the rosary, one relives important and meaningful moments in the history of salvation; one relives the various stages of Christ's mission. With Mary, the heart turns towards the mystery of Jesus [...]” Thus, by meditating on each of the 150 Hail Marys that make up the rosary prayer, we discover the close link between the Bible and the rosary. Indeed, the rosary is not a prayer like any other for several reasons: its power, its simplicity. With the rosary prayer, we meditate on the most important passages of the lives of Jesus and Mary in the New Testament.
Originally, the rosary was a prayer invented by monks to help them and sometimes replace the reading of the psalms for those who could not read. The psalms are part of the Bible and number 150. Thus, the rosary is intimately linked to the Bible through these 150 Ave Maria. And of course, other connections exist...
The prayer of the Hail Mary that we recite 150 times if we say the rosary originates in the Gospel according to Saint Luke in chapter 1, verse 28: “The angel went to her and said, 'Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” The form we currently know has been enriched by Pope Saint Pius V.
The strongest link between the rosary and the Bible is found in the meditation on the various mysteries proposed by the Church. It is true that the joyful, luminous, sorrowful and glorious mysteries take up passages from the life of Jesus and Mary of the Annunciation to the coronation of the Virgin through the wedding of Cana and the Crucifixion and many others. The mysteries of the rosary allow us to better understand the various passages of the Bible, especially if we are used to reciting the rosary during the week.
Pope John Paul II said: “the rosary is the royal road to contemplation.” Indeed, when we take the time to meditate on each mystery with the associated mystery fruit, we can know Jesus and Mary better and receive numerous graces. And when we recite our decade, we can add the clausulae in order to delve deeply into the mystery we are meditating on.
