Matthew 11:15

“Whoever has ears, let them hear!” (Matthew 11:15)

Passage from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 11

Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence, and violent people have been raiding it. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. Whoever has ears, let them hear. (Matthew 11:11-15)

Listen

Jesus calls us several times in the gospels: Our listening is often superficial and does not always allow the Word of God to anchor in us, germinate and bear fruit.

This is what Jesus explains to us in the Parable of the Sower. This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.” (Matthew 13:13)

“Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.”  (Luke 8:18)

Jesus is the Word made flesh; we must welcome Him and welcome His word with all of our being. He delivers us a living Word that joins us in the reality of our lives and has the power to transform them. The Holy Spirit can help us to open ourselves to this Word and to hear it truly. We can thus invoke the Holy Spirit before reading and meditating a passage or verse of the Bible in order to fully listen to what God wants to tell us, here and now.
