“He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20)
Passage from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 17
“When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. ‘Lord, have mercy on my son,’ he said. ‘He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.’ ‘You unbelieving and perverse generation,’ Jesus replied, ‘how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.’ Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment. Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, ‘Why couldn’t we drive it out?’ He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

With faith, nothing is impossible!
The word of Jesus to his disciples, in response to their powerlessness to drive out the demon, is for us a fundamental teaching in our life as Christians: What seems impossible in the eyes of men is made possible by faith! Indeed, when we are animated by a deep faith, we are then in communion with God and thus become participants in his power.
The comparison that Jesus uses “if you have faith as small as a mustard seed” reveals information about the nature of the faith that is being asked of us: The mustard seed is the smallest of the seeds, but it produces an abundant herb. In other words, it means that we only have to do the smallest act of faith to see the power of the Lord exercised. There is also a principle of vitality in faith: It is expanding and growing according to our degree of trust in God.
Thus, this verse illustrates the miracles that the Lord wants to do through us, if we put our trust in him! We, too, are called to heal the sick and to drive out demons, and though our weak nature does not allow us, with faith, nothing is impossible for us! Also, let us remember the words of the apostle Paul “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13) and entrust to the Lord all things, so that he may renew them of his power!
