Guardian angels are spiritual creatures sent by God to protect and watch over humans. God loves us so much that He gives each of us a companion to assist us throughout our lives. More than protecting us, these angels also bring our prayers to Jesus Christ.
Many false notions about angels have been taught over the years. Guardian angels, as Catholics see them, are spiritual guides. If we invoke them, they will bring clarity to our decisions and actions, and show us the way on the path to the Kingdom of God, all the while respecting our individual freedoms.
On the Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels, October 2nd, Pope Francis invited us to evaluate “the relationship with this angel that the Lord has sent to guard (us) and to accompany (us) on the path, and who always beholds the face of the Father who is in heaven”.
“Angel of God, My guardian Dear, to whom God's love commits me here, ever this day or night be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide.
Amen.”
“Angel sent by God to guide me, be my light and walk beside me; be my guardian and protect me; on the paths of life direct me.
Amen.”
Your guardian angel is a daily companion, who watches over you day and night. You can therefore talk to him right when waking up, and offer him a morning prayer, the Angele Dei or just a simple “hello!”. Before going to bed, you can say a night prayer to your guardian angel. Some saints, such as Padre Pio and St. John Vianney, were very close to their guardian angels. Padre Pio wrote beautiful prayers to his guardian angel, that can inspire you.
Of course, you can pray to your guardian angel at any moment of the day in times of need. You can also follow the liturgy of the hours to dedicate different hours of the day to pray to your guardian angel: you will sometimes find prayers to the angels during the Angelus, or during complines.
Finally, do not forget to express your gratitude to your guardian angel with a prayer of thanksgiving.
"O Holy Angels of God, here, in the presence of the Triune God and in the love of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer, I, a poor sinner, want to make a covenant with you, who are his servants, so that in union with you, I might work with humility and fortitude for the glory of God and the coming of his Kingdom. Therefore, I implore you to assist me, especially in the adoration of God and of the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar, in the contemplation of the word and the salvific works of God, in the imitation of Christ and in the love of his Cross in a spirit of expiation, in the faithful fulfillment of my mission within the Church, serving humbly after the example of Mary, my heavenly Mother, your Queen.
And you, my good guardian angel, who continually behold the face of our Father in heaven, God entrusted me to you from the very beginning of my life. I thank you with all my heart for your loving care. I commit myself to you and promise you my love and fidelity. I beg you: protect me against my own weakness and against the attacks of the wicked spirits; enlighten my mind and my heart so that I may always know and accomplish the will of God; and lead me to union with God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen."
“My good angel,
God asked you to watch over me from the moment I wake up
And protect my bed when I go to sleep every night
I am still young and weak,
please, walk beside me at all times
guide me, talk to me
hold my hand as I listen to you
My good angel, so I don’t fall.
Amen.”
