“The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world." (John 1:9)
Beginning prologue of the Gospel of John
“IN THE BEGINNING was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was with God in the beginning.
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
There was a man sent from God whose name was John.
He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.
He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world." (John 1:1-9)
In his magnificent Prologue , John evokes John the Baptist to tell us about Jesus. Indeed, this precursor came to bear witness to the light. His role is to take men out of darkness and their blindness to bring them into the light of faith. While John the Baptist is only a “lamp” (John 5:35), Jesus is the light, he is comparable to the sun that radiates for the whole world. Nothing stops the light of Christ, it shines on all men. However not all wish to turn to the Light and some prefer Darkness, so the Light glows for the salvation of those who receive it. A few chapters later, Jesus again proclaims “I am the Light of the World” (John 8:12).
Jesus is the light that nothing and nobody stops, let us turn to him to receive his gifts and graces fully.
