"When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
"When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
“The Pharisees challenged him, ‘Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.’ Jesus answered, ‘Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me." (John 8:12-16)
The apostle John, in his gospel, reveals the true nature of Christ, true man and true God. In particular, he insists on its quality as the light of the world on several occasions. Here are the words of the evangelist John : “The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world." (John 1:9) and “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5).
When originally God says “Let there be light” (Book of Genesis), the Word of God, his creative word, immediately realizes the divine order, making light. Therefore Jesus is himself the Light. On the other hand, the absence of God constitutes darkness. The man who follows Christ remains in the light, conversely the man who rejects Jesus chooses darkness and plunges into darkness. Jesus is also life: “I am the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6), which is why Jesus speaks of the light of life. Life is necessarily light because it finds its source in God. In Jesus there is only life and eternal light. There is no death or darkness for those who follow Jesus, live according to his commandments and remain in his love.
