Passage from the Gospel of John, chapter 4
“So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans. ) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
(John 4:5-10)
This verse is found in the famous exchange between Jesus and the Samaritan woman. The Samaritans have a bad reputation with the Jews because they do not live according to the law. Notable Jews despise them and avoid contact with them. Jesus must go through this region and cares about the salvation of all. Sitting on the lip of the well, he comes into contact with this woman, completely unaware of her life, Jesus nevertheless lowers himself to ask her for a drink. The woman shows a great astonishment because she knows the prejudices of the Jews toward the Samaritans. There follows a two-way dialog between Jesus and the woman, Jesus speaks to her on a spiritual level that the Samaritan does not immediately grasp. When Jesus reveals her mistakes to her, the woman is astounded. She believes all her words and runs to announce to the village that she has found the Messiah.
The words of Jesus are addressed to all times and to all men, he asks us for a drink, which means that he awaits our interest in him and our love. In return, he gives us living water — that is, peace, salvation and eternal life.
Jesus wishes to maintain a relationship of love with each of us : We give him our love and put in him our trust. In return, He makes the water of life flow in us. Let’s enter this relationship with the help of Hozana prayer communities !
