Chaplet St. Michael the Archangel

The Chaplet of Saint Michael is an expression of devotion to the Archangel Saint Michael. This prayer, first mentioned under the names Chaplet of the Angel or Chaplet of the Angels in the 18th century following apparitions reportedly received by a Portuguese Carmelite nun, Antonia d’Astonac, was spread thanks to Sister Marie-Colombe, an 18th-century Carmelite from Vetralla. At her request to publish this chaplet 100 years after her death, its recitation was approved by a decree of Pope Pius IX in 1851. Why Pray the Chaplet of Saint Michael?

A Prayer for the Church and for the Deceased

Over time, various promises and indulgences have been associated with this chaplet.
Today, however, its recitation is primarily recommended for two main intentions:

  • To seek Saint Michael’s assistance for the Church in its needs and to support it in its battles (this was, in fact, the original purpose of Sister Marie Colombe’s request),

  • To pray for the souls in purgatory and entrust them to the intercession of the Archangel, the defender of the deceased.

A Relationship of Friendship with the Archangel

Praying this chaplet fosters a relationship with Saint Michael and teaches us how to better serve the Virgin Mary, Queen of the Angels, and through her, Christ.

Saint Michael is the heavenly warrior. With his army of holy angels, he fights against the rebel angels and defeats the dragon. We can ask him for help in our spiritual battles, as well as for protection against evil.
