As christians, the singular goal of our earthly pilgrimage is to resemble our Lord Jesus Christ He said it himself: “... for I am gentle and humble in heart...” (Matthew 11:29). Humility is therefore a virtue that we must develop and cherish in our hearts. Indeed, Jesus talks about humility in our hearts because God looks at our hearts above all else. So how can we manage not to be prideful inside, but to bow before God? In His word, we find the attitudes that need to be changed to see our prideful hearts transform into the hearts of humble servants. Here are 8 bible passages that teach us what humility before God really means.
“Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” (James 4:13-15)
In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, Because ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’ Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:5-7)
“But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.” (1 Corinthians 5:10)
“For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” (Romans 12:3)
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” (Philippians 2:3-4)
“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” (Psalms 41:2-3)
"He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you. You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth...” (Deuteronomy 8:16-18)
“Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life.” (Proverbs 22:4)
