The word “worship” is the translation for the Greek “proskuneó,” which also means “to kneel, prostrate oneself, or to show one’s devotion to a being of a higher rank”.
Worshiping God means showing Him the respect, homage, and devotion that only He deserves. Jesus rebuked the Samaritans, saying, “You Samaritans worship what you do not know.” (John 4:22). Here are 5 Bible verses that show us who God is and why to worship Him.
“I know that the Lord is great, that our Lord is greater than all gods.” (Psalms 135:5)
“For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.” (1 Corinthians 1:25)
“For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.” (Psalms 100:5)
“The Lord does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths. He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth; he sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.” (Psalms 134:5-6)
“The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, nor is there breath in their mouths. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.” (Psalms 134:15-18)
Worship is the reverence and devotion we offer to God. It is the primary duty of every believer—an act of the heart that expresses respect, love, faith, and loyalty to the Lord. For Catholics, worship also includes Eucharistic adoration, honoring Jesus truly present in the consecrated host.
In John 4, Jesus explains to the Samaritan woman what true worship means:
“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and His worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” (John 4:23-24, NIV)
Among the 150 Psalms, many are perfect for praising and adoring God. Two powerful examples are:
Psalm 145:
“I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever. Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.” (Psalm 145:1-2, NIV)
Psalm 150:
“Praise the Lord. Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him in His mighty heavens. Praise Him for His acts of power; praise Him for His surpassing greatness.” (Psalm 150:1-2, NIV)
