Everyone faces loneliness at some point in their life. This sense of isolation and separation from others can be very difficult to live with and can plunge us into deep distress. The Hebrew term which translates as “desert” also refers to the poignant notion of abandonment.
For us Christians, we can find comfort and support in our loving relationship with God, because even if we feel alone, we are not. He is there, present with us every minute of our lives! We can ask God to help us to endure the feeling of loneliness, and to get us out of our isolation, as King David did: “Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted.” (Psalms 25:16)
To fight loneliness, we can meditate and pray on these 10 biblical quotes about loneliness.
Praying and Suffering - Hozana
“... and surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)
“Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me.” (Psalms 27:10)
“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’ So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (Hebrews 13:5-6)
“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)
“The Lord God said, It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” (Genesis 2:18)
“A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.” (Psalms 68:5-6)
“The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day to pray and to ask God for help.” (1 Timothy 5:5)
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6-7)
A sense of isolation or exclusion can be a real source of suffering. However, loneliness can also bear fruit. Periods of loneliness can be the occasion to take a step back and better understand oneself and one's deepest desires, which is an enrichment of one's inner life, a stronger intimacy with God. This can be particularly the case during periods of celibacy, when we can feel emotional loneliness but also reunion with ourselves. Jesus, during his public life, needed moments of solitude, like during his 40 days in the desert. If it was a source of hardship, it was also a place of intimacy with the Father. In our deserts, God reveals Himself.
- Let us ask God, in our prayers, that our periods of celibacy or unwanted solitude, be fruitful
- With different practices of Christian meditation, we can also try to better enjoy these periods of silence in the world to go to meet God, who lives in us.
Even if we feel alone and abandoned, let us not fear, for Christ has promised us his support: “... and surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20). Thus, in prayer, alone or with others, we can build a true relationship of love to God and find comfort and peace!
